AGGLUTININS OF CHOLERA PATIENTS FOR VIBRIO CHOLERAE, BRUCELLA AND SAMONELLA ENTERITIDIS

Abstract
Antibodies for Vibrio cholerae, Salmonella enteritidis, and Brucella antigens in 16 sera from healthy persons and 38 sera from cholera patients in 1969, and antigenic correlation between them were examined by agglutination and agglutinin absorption. The results obtained were as follows.
Among cholera patients from Ogawa subtype of the El Tor variety of Vibrio cholerae was isolated, both H and O anti-Ogawa antibodies were demonstrated. However, titer of O-agglutinin was found to be higher than that of H-agglutinin, indicating O-agglutination of Vibrio cholerae is a more rapidly developing reaction than H-agglutination in cholera. It seems to be more valuable in the detection of cholera antibody to measure 0-agglutinin rather than H-agglutinin.
Brucella agglutinins were also observed in sera from cholera patients and it was completely eliminated by absorption of patients¢¥ sera with Ogawa O antigen, indicating the appearance of Brucella agglutinin in sera from cholera patients is due to, in part at least, the cross-reaction between Ogawa O antigen of Vibrio cholerae and Brucella antigen.
The sera of cholera patients contained agglutinins for both O and H antigens of Salmonella enteritidis, and the antibody for H antigen was completely absorbed with Ogawa O antigen, but O antibodies were not completely absorbed, suggesting O antigen of Vibcholerae stimulates antibody against H antigen of Salmonella enteritidis.
